After the forest fires that raged across Greece in the summer of 2021, burning more than 50,000 hectares, a state of emergency has been in state for more than a week in the hardest-hit region of northern Evia.
The smoke from the fires enveloped the island near Athens in heavy clouds of smoke for days. More than 2000 people had to be evacuated as a result of the fires. Firefighters were sent from several nations as reinforcements.
In recent years, forest fires have occurred in Greece every summer, but rising temperatures due to climate change are making them last longer and more dangerous.
